Position Description

Working under the direction of the Public Relations Manager, the Public Affairs Coordinator supports efforts to promote CarMax milestones, events and newsworthy initiatives through public relations. The Public Affairs Coordinator reviews and responds to incoming inquiries on a phone hotline and email account, ensuring accurate and timely responses to reporters requesting CarMax comment for inclusion in stories; general public inquiries; and questions from CarMax store associates. In addition, the Public Affairs Coordinator supports research, measurement, media monitoring, and event planning projects for the team. As a first responder to media and customer inquiries, across the United States and in different time zones, this position at times requires on call night and weekend work times.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Media Relations
• Receive and assess incoming news media inquiries and gather information as necessary, including real estate, construction and new store inquiries
• Create and maintain news media contact lists for a variety of initiatives
• Monitor automotive and retail industry and competitive news
• Update company bios, media kits and other media materials
• Conduct media outreach to garner coverage of CarMax, Inc. and The CarMax Foundation announcements, news releases and content

Research, Measurement & Execution Support
• Conduct news media coverage monitoring and measurement activities; create qualitative and quantitative reports of results
• Research awards opportunities for CarMax and The CarMax Foundation
• Support award entry efforts including information gathering and writing

Grand Openings and other PR Events
• Implement Grand Opening Media Day event activities and logistics including, but not limited to, researching local event planners, PR agencies and third-party vendors; inviting VIPs; and preparing event agenda, bios and other materials
• Plan event logistics and invitation lists and manage RSVPs for PR events to maximize CarMax’s positive exposure
• Create new market media lists and conduct media outreach to generate positive media coverage of CarMax hiring and new stores

Social Media and Online Communications
• Monitor conversations about CarMax on company and Foundation social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter
• Coordinate with Customer Relations, Social Media, HR and Legal teams to effectively notify and respond to reputation issues on social media platforms and review sites, as needed

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• Four year college degree (BA/BS) in Communications, Public Relations, Advertising or related field required
• One to three years of experience in public relations and marketing

*This is a part-time position requiring up to 30 hours per week.
